Jason in his paint-spattered Big Buck Bibs, which onlookers suggest he should sell on eBay!
“Hey, you oughta sell those on eBay! I’m serious! You could get $500.00 for those.”
No less than 20 times have folks told me that as I’ve been hot-painting a window.
This always blows my mind. To me, they’ve always been just my everyday painting bibs. They’re warm, they’re protective, but nothing special, to me.
Onlookers and customers, I’ve learned, may see things differently. I’ve come to see that these bibs somehow have a special value in their eyes. It’s like they’re so colorful, so patterned in an arbitrary, paint-spattered way, that they’ve acquired almost artistic value.
I guess one of the lessons of these kinds of statements is that people see me, my togs, my painting actions as something special. They see a performance going on and they somehow want to participate.
And, actually, I’m glad they do want to. It attracts even attention to what I’m doing — and how I’m helping out my customers. It shows me that everyone wants to be actively involved in art, even if it’s just art’s togs!
